Cases of equine lameness from
inflamed and sore joints have been increasing in recent years. Many times the treatment options rely upon
the anti-inflammatory drugs. However,
more horse owners are now turning to the natural relief of omega 3 fish oil.
Research has found that omega
3 essential fatty acids (EFA) can reduce the activity of an enzyme that
destroys cartilage. The activity of this
enzyme leads to the inflammation response by the body. Omega 3 is a natural anti-inflammatory agent
– without any side effects.
Additional research is
showing that diet also plays a large role in this increase in equine lameness. In particular, horses are being fed more
processed foods and feeds (particularly corn) that contain an excess of omega 6
fatty acids. An overabundance of omega
6 fatty acids actually promotes inflammation.
Even though both omega 6 and
omega 3 are required by the body, they have to be in the proper
proportion. And the omega 3 fatty acids
HAVE to be in the form of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic
Acid). Omega 3 from plants (e.g.,
flaxseed oil) is in the form of
ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) – a form that cannot be
utilized very efficiently by horses or humans. Only fish oil provides the omega 3
essentially fatty acids in the biologically-available forms.
Since fish oil is not a
regular part of a horse diet, most horses have not been too keen on the
flavor.
Sea Pet has developed a peppermint-flavored omega-3 fish oil
product specifically to appeal to horses.
Horses love the flavor of the Sea Pet
Omega 3 Fish Oil for Horses. Only
about 1-2 tablespoons of Sea Pet
Omega 3 Fish Oil for Horses are suggested daily. It can be easily added to your horse’s
regular feed.
Omega 3 fish oil is also used
to alleviate some skin and coat conditions – dryness, flaking, itching, and
scratching – with very noticeable and appealing results.
