Living in Minnesota now, Liz Busa Deye may miss the sea air of her native New England but with the help of Sea Starr Animal Health, Inc. her sled dogs do not miss out on the benefits the ocean in their diets. In March, Freking not only won the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, a 438-mile run along the shore of Lake Superior, as Rookie of the Year but finished over 2 hours ahead of the 2nd place finisher! Carder Starr, co-owner of Sea Starr Animal Health, Inc. with his wife, Eileen Molloy-Starr, received a phone call from a very excited Deye at the finish line shortly after Freking had crossed to inform him of the win.

Freking reported that the veterinarians at the race checkpoints commented that his dogs were in excellent shape and condition - which he and Deye attribute to the overall health benefits of the omega 3 fish oil and, in particular, the natural vitamin E that Sea Pet adds.  Natural Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant which reduces the oxidative damage that can occur within the body from exercise and exertion. Freking noted that “the team recovered exceptionally well, performing wonderfully, and leaving every checkpoint as though leaving the starting chute.”

Starr reports that the company, with their Sea Pet Omega-3 Fish Oil with Natural Vitamin E, is also participating in a research study being conducted by the University of Minnesota Veterinary School comparing the blood levels of vitamin E in sleddogs. Preliminary results have shown that the blood levels of vitamin E were higher in the dogs supplemented with Sea Pet as compared to the control group of dogs that did not receive the fish oil. Not only did the dogs have increased stamina and endurance they also did not suffer from any cracked paw pads – a condition that can occur when dogs run great distances over ice and snow.
